about

Release: Live at NHM 2.3.6
Release Date: October 3, 2006
Label: Pehr
Catalog Number: Pehr045

In late 2005, Languis were commissioned by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles
County to create a piece for the Sonic Scenery exhibit, an experience that allowed museum patrons to view the museum’s exhibits through the soundscapes of several prominent artists. Luminaries such as David J (Love & Rockets, Bauhaus), Sun Ra Arkestra, Ozomatli, John Hassel, Autolux and Matmos were amongst their peers.

On February 3rd, 2006, for the opening of this event Languis was invited to perform live along with Matmos, Daedelus and guest speakers. Due to fire code and audio restraints the Museum had to devise a new way to present this performance. The Silent Set was created. The idea was that the audience would experience the performance through plugging in headphones through specially designed ports in the venue. No Amplification.

This meant that Languis could not bring along any sort of traditional live setup. Acoustic instruments were out! Instead the band brought along everything from a thrift store tape machine with homemade tape loops, a dvd player, minidiscs with samples of the evenings events, an open microphone, a massive array of effects processors, along with drum machines, synthesizers, and one guitar. Not a laptop computer in sight!

This also meant that with a simple stereo recording the performance could be captured
and heard in the exact same way audience members experienced it at the opening. Languis, Live at NHM 2.3.6 contains the entire unedited 3 hour performance by Languis broken down into 3 parts for download. Live at NHM 2.3.6 captures the band at their most collaborative and inventive and this is the only format that can truly capture the performance as it can be played at length in its entirety. Recommended for fans and followers of experimental electronic and ambient music.
